My first guess would be a side effect of confusion on my part. I assumed that you were sending email to the freebsd-stable mailing list, and the major number I gave is for FreeBSD. If you are running a different OS, your major number would be different. I assume that you ran venus-setup as root... The next step I would do is to find where the message open failed for /dev/cfs0 is produced and change it to explain why the open failed (then send in the diffs as a patch).
