As long as you are running the same instance of the OS kernel,
i.e. inside the same physical host, you are better off using RAID.

Disk interface, SCSI or IDE, is a lot more effective than IP together with
all filesystem layers on top of it.

I don't know what Vinum is, but I am running Coda servers on RAID -
it makes no remarkable performance difference.
Disk mirroring can even improve read performance.
