Actually it is quite unusual that open_log fails. Are you sure rvm is
initialized correctly?

What are the rvm related settings in /etc/coda/server.conf?
Did you compile yourself? Perhaps the actual settings are stored in
/etc/coda by the setup scripts, but the server is looking for
/usr/local/etc/coda...

A lot can be wrong at this point. Like Ivan said, strace output will
probably give some clues as to what actually is happening here.
