A as matter of fact you can. I just finished getting my laptop  running
the 2.6.2 Linux Kernel. There is a compile time option for the codafs
module to use the the old API (Y/N). I answered N, compiled the kernel,
and venus fired right up. No problems. 

Oh and I'm running Coda 6.0.3 client on my laptop which is running Suse
9.0.
