I'll look for the fix on the next portage tree sync. I bet that would explain why a lot of other tools weren't working right. I decided that since the local network is private, I should share the /usr/portage/distfiles directory using NFS. Though, it won't be quite as secure as I'd like, esp. considering there are windows/linux dual-boot hosts on the network, emerge requires hash checks on all of the distribution files anyway, thus reducing the likelihood of any kind of sabotage. Plus, it will perform better and there will be none of those pesky global-local inconsistencies. Your efforts are not in vain though! There may come another time when I'll need to use coda on a gentoo system and I'll need to make sure it's mounted right. Again, thanks for all your help.
