ISR folks,

Here are some notes from the last ISR meeting of a few weeks ago. The
next meeting will be Wed. July 25, 9-11 AM in Wean 7220. (note 7th floor,
not 8th floor)

The notes with one * were taken on the date of the meeting. Post-meeting
updates are denoted by a '**'.

* Deadlocks: Benjamin's on the case. may be related to VMplayer 2?

** Update: VMplayer 2 not related. Benjamin has tracked down the deadlock
and applied a fix, which has been released with version 0.8.3.

* isr-list : new archive, will receive tips and support emails

** new archive is at: http://www.coda.cs.cmu.edu/maillists/isr-list/

* to acquire:

    - VMware workstation 6 license (for working on new config files)
    ** (Update: CMU now has a campus-wide site-license)
    - warranty service for bad RAM in bering.isr
** (Update: Ajay has received a replacement)
    - 10k rpm fibrechannel disk for raid array (IBM replacement)
** (Update: done, RAID array is happy again)

* Packaging: 'universal' (distribution-neutral) script for building
modules, so the install process is the same for different dists.

** Update: not in 0.8.3 yet, but in progress. Trying out the OpenSUSE
build service, but not fully running yet.

* 'dirtometer': add low-res in-guest viewer, click for high detail, and
allow saving snapshots of state. also, suggestions from Benjamin about
using shared memory, and modified vs. modified-session notions in vulpes.

** Update: shared memory version implemented. Still need a CGI or other
method9s) for rendering inside the host.

* VMMs: KVM still popular on the new systems, VMware working out
otherwise. Keeping an eye on cool stuff in the "ecosystem" like libvirt.

** Update: we've been impressed with VirtualBox, a GPL VMM similar to
VMware.
